Two plant species invent the same chemically complex and medically interesting substance

A team of researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology collaborated with international colleagues to study the biosynthesis of ipecacuanha alkaloids. They compared two plant species and discovered that, despite using similar chemical approaches, the species employ different enzymes and starting materials. These findings are important for enabling the production of these substances on a larger scale.
