The largest biome on earth in peril?

In a study published in the journal Nature Communications, a team of researchers from the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin in cooperation with the University of Reno, Nevada, USA, has re-examined fossil plankton in marine sediments. Plankton is responsible for half of the oxygen production on our planet. Plankton ecologists have so far predicted that global warming will cause plankton to migrate to higher latitudes with cooler seawater and that there will be no changes in the composition of ecosystems. Now the researchers have found out that in the past – with similarly large temperature fluctuations – the species did not migrate but became extinct.
